Bartók wrote his Hungarian Peasant Songs between 1914 and 1918, later followed by a selection of piano pieces bearing the same title. Piano Concerto No. 3 is Bartók's last completed work, written when the composer was already suffering from terminal illness in New York in 1945. Of his works for orchestra and piano, this is the only piece of music that he did not write for himself but for his wife Ditta Pásztory, without realising that illness would prevent him from playing it as soloist. The pr...emière was eventually performed in Philadelphia by György Sándor with conductor Jenő Ormándy – Ditta Pásztory never played the work in public. Schubert's Symphony No. 5 was first performed in 1816, the year of its composition, by a Viennese amateur orchestra. Schubert was forced to adapt to the composition and modest technical ability of the orchestra, but it is testament to the maturity and skill of the 19-year-old that this compromise is not apparent for a moment in the simple musical factura??. On the contrary, the music is typified by the deliberate adherence to form and artistic economy of Mozart. The idea for Tchaikovsky to write an overture to Shakespeare's Romeo and Julia originated from the composer Mily Balakirev. The influential Russian not only drew up a detailed plan, but also made recommendations regarding the main and sub-themes, and many aspects of the instrumentation also derive from him. The heavily edited final version of the piece, dating back to 1880, is most often played today. The music of the overture-fantasy does not follow the Shakespeare play to the letter and is much more focused on capturing its poetic essence. Presented by: Budapest Festival Orchestra
