David Zinman was originally the assistant to Pierre Monteux, who took him to Europe, where he first became musical director of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, then of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Zinman has headed the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich since 1995. More than a hundred recordings have yielded dozens of industry accolades, including five Grammys and one Gramophone award. He also works as a guest conductor for some of the world's top orchestras from New York to Berlin and Vien...na. As a result of his flawless technical background, Truls Mørk belongs among the world's elite both as a soloist and a chamber musician. His career was launched by victory in the International Tchaikovsky Competition, where he made history as the first ever Scandinavian prizewinner. The cellist now works with the world's top conductors, including Haitink, Sawallisch and Salonen. Two years ago, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam staged a mini festival of four concerts featuring Mørk and his guests. A composer who pursued the course set by his Russian forebears, Anatoly Lyadov primarily felt at home in those simple forms that allowed him to fly on the wings of his imagination to incredible fantasy lands. He composed three orchestral fairy tales between 1904 and 1909, the second of which will be performed tonight. The music is highly descriptive, transporting the listener to a dark, fantastic forest embracing a mysterious lake in which mermaids bathe. Rachmaninov's final symphony is suitably representative of his later work. It was written in an unconventional three-movement structure, although the third movement actually consists of two parts of distinct character, creating the impression that the piece is indeed comprised of four movements. The première took place in Philadelphia in 1936, conducted by Leopold Stokowski, a respected interpreter of Rachmaninov's work. Presented by: Budapest Festival Orchestra
