Most music enthusiasts know Wolfgang Holzmair primarily as a concert and lieder singer. He has performed with just about every major orchestra in the world, and has been invited to sing in productions by the likes of Blomstedt, Boulez, Chailly and Iván Fischer. Holzmair, who is considered among the most accomplished interpreters of the songs of Mahler, has been a guest professor at the Royal College of Music in London since 1998. Enescu dedicated his first suite to Saint-Saëns when he wrote it ...in 1904. The Prélude à l'unisson – as its name suggests – is founded on the monophonic play of the string section. The influence of Romanian folk music can clearly be discerned in this work, which Gustav Mahler premièred in New York in 1905. György Orbán's Serenade No. 4 pays its dues to the work of Bartók and Mahler in its use of the pentaton scale. “ Bartók and Mahler had the greatest effect on my career as a composer, but it is unusual to be able to position two musical orientations alongside each other at all. The pentatonic scale is essential to Bartók as it is on this that his great periods are founded. Yet, strangely, it also appears in Mahler's music, albeit only to add colour, playfulness and fleeting pastoral moments,” György Orbán once wrote. Mahler committed the first draft of his Symphony No. 1 to parchment in 1884, but the work was not completed until 1888. “These emotions became so powerful in me that they gushed forth like an impetuous torrent…At a single blow, all the floodgates were opened within me!” Mahler wrote on completing the masterpiece. The world première took place on 20 November 1899 in Budapest and was a great success with the audience, but drew a mixed response from critics.
