The Siegfried Idyll was one of the strangest Christmas and birthday gifts in history. The recipient was Cosima Wagner, who was serenaded with the piece by her husband at dawn on her birthday, which happened to fall on 25 December 1870. Fortunately, the Siegfried Idyll can also be performed as a symphony, which is how it will be heard at the Palace of Arts. Tannhäuser was premièred in Dresden's Royal Saxon Court Theatre on 19 October 1845. By 1847, Wagner had already made minor modifications to ...the score, but the real reworking occurred in 1861, when the Opéra de Paris demanded the insertion of a ballet scene to follow the Overture. It was thus that the beautiful Bacchanalia dance was added to the work. Wagner also wrote the first draft of the Die Meistersänger von Nürnberg in 1845, but the opera was only completed two decades later between 1862 and 1868. The Overture addresses the four main themes of the opera. Two orchestral sections play together in concert halls??, with Dawn and Siegfried’s Rhine Journey originally in the Götterdämmering prologue and in the first act respectively. While the body of Siegfried, who has been slain by Hagen, is carried to the Hall of the Gibichungs, a magnificent funeral march pays tribute to his life. Götterdämmerung is the crowning glory of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen cycle of four operas. The performance features outstanding German mezzo-soprano Petra Lang, who is just as warmly welcomed in opera houses as she is on the concert stage. After making her debut at La Scala in Milan in 1997, she appeared at Carnegie Hall in New York and at London's Covent Garden a year later. Lang regularly sings the four Wagner mezzo-soprano roles (Fricka, Waltraute, Brangäne, Kundry and Venus), and Judit from Duke Bluebeard's Castle, but she is equally at home with Verdi's major mezzo-soprano characters (Eboli and Amneris). She is also among the most accomplished performers of the Mahler song cycles. Presented by the Budapest Festival Orchestra
