Written in 1883, the hero of Le chassuer maudit (The Accursed Hunter) is a count living in the Rhine Valley who chooses to go hunting instead of attending Sunday mass. He pays a heavy price for his sins when he is cursed by Satan himself and condemned to never finding peace. The count's attempts to escape are in vain: Demons are destined to pursue him for the rest of his life. Poème de l'Amour et de la Mer is set to two poems by Maurice Bouchor (La fleur des eaux and La mort de l'amour). The tw...o songs are connected by an orchestral interlude. Chausson considered the song cycle to be one of his most important works and worked on it for the best part of a decade. Hector Berlioz's Fantastic Symphony, written in 1830, is among the genre's most significant pieces of music thanks to its powerful storytelling quality. It is not only the finest early example of programme music, but also the root of modern instrumentation, and one of the first musical self-portraits of a subjective artist for whom the creative challenge and associated suffering have become an integral part of the composition. Born in Israel, Pinchas Steinberg was music director of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1989 to 1996. He later occupied the same position at the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva between 2002 and 2005. He has appeared with almost every major symphony orchestra, including the New York, Israeli and Berlin Philharmonics, and has conducted numerous opera productions in the world's top theatres. Among these was the Vienna Staatsoper, where he was permanent guest conductor for six years from 1988. This is his sixth performance with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Born in Saint Petersburg and residing in Berlin, opera singer Elena Zhidkova is a highly sought-after guest of the world's biggest opera houses and festivals.
