Mikhail Pletnev is not just a superb pianist and conductor, he is also an important developer of orchestras. It was he who brought the Russian National Orchestra from nowhere to the international front line, following a deliberate policy of opposing the state dominated structures then in place. Pletnev spends most his time with his own orchestra and so it is quite a rarity to catch him as a guest conductor. British pianist Stephen Hough made his breakthrough by winning the 1983 Naumburg Intern...ational Piano Competition and has hardly looked back. He is regularly invited as a soloist by the great conductors of our time (Dohnányi, Dutoit, Gergiev, Järvi, Levine, Rattle, Salonen, Tilson Thomas, Vänskä), is a regular performer at the great music festivals (Ravinia, Tanglewood, Hollywood Bowl, Mostly Mozart, Edinburgh, Salzburg, BBC Proms). The idea for Tchaikovsky to write an overture to Romeo and Juliet came from fellow composer Balakirev. The music of this fantasy-overture does not follow the Shakespeare’s plot in any detail, rather it latches on to its poetic essence. The Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini was the composer’s final concerto work, written in 1934 when he was residing in Switzerland. It is essentially his fifth concerto. Rachmaninov writes 24 variations on the melody of Paganini’s 24th violin caprice. Shostakovich composed his final symphony, No. 15 in 1971. He was battling illness and the work depicts the process of human life from birth to death.
