The story of Brahms’s Piano Concerto in D minor is rather unusual. Schumann advised Brahms to write a symphony and he began work in 1858: rather than orchestrate it, he eventually produced a version for two pianos. While working on the orchestration, he began to realise the extent to which the character of the piano had influenced the writing and so decided to recast it as a piano concerto. The original symphony has a funeral march movement but it did not suit the piano concerto form: Brahms eve...ntually recycled it in his German Requiem. Bartók composed his Two Romanian Dances (op. 8a) in 1909 and 1910 for piano, and created an orchestral arrangement of the first dance for a concert on February 12th 1911. The audience received it so enthusiastically that it was immediately encored. Bartók said in 1931 that although the work is influenced by Romanian folk music, the themes he employed were his own invention. Concerto was Bartók’s first work following his immigration to America. It was written after a four year creative hiatus. Its title is an allusion to a form common in Baroque music, which focuses on instruments and instrumental groups. It is not a concerto in the Brahmsian sense. Bartók wrote it with remarkable speed, completing it under two months, although its première was not for a further year, when Serge Koussevitzky conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a performance in December 1944.
