“Dionysia is an experiment to evoke certain ritualistic events and the spirit of the Dionysus cult of Antiquity which influences our culture even today, and to which we owe so much, not least theatre… The work comprises several movements each of which depicts a rhythm, from the phallic march to the offering of a sacrifice, to the final Dionysian ecstasy. In its sonority and orchestral treatment, this is a work of the present, but uses tradition as a background organisation force.” László Melis... Mahler composed his seventh symphony, sometimes called “Lied der Nacht” (Song of the Night) in Vienna in 1905. It has five movements: two monumental outer movements surround three smaller movements, the central Scherzo being surrounded by two movements of “night music.” But the general trajectory of the work takes it from darkness to blazing sunshine. “This is an immense orchestral creation, which in its dimensions and concept is the final word of a man who has suffered the vicissitudes of fate” (Aladár Bálint writing about Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 in the 1916/23 edition of Nyugat magazine on the occasion of its Hungarian première.)
