Hans Graf won the Karl Böhm conducting competition in 1979 and he has not looked back. He is a major figure at the Salzburg Festival and for twelve years has conducted there. He is also a supreme opera conductor, and has directed successful productions in Vienna, Munich, Paris and Rome. Born in 1966, Christian Tetzlaff is one of the finest instrumental soloists of his generation. He recently performed as part of Pierre Boulez’s Ligeti Project with the London Symphony Orchestra, and gave concert...s with the Dresden Staatskapelle and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. His recording of all Bach’s solo sonatas and partitas won a French Diapason d’or prize. Violinist Joseph Joachim (1833–1897) was a giant in music history. At the age of twelve, he played Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Mendelssohn conducting, marking the rediscovery of the piece. Later Brahms composed for him the Violin Concerto and the Double Concerto. He was also a composer although this is not so well known these days. “There is more spirit in Joachim than in all the young composers together”, wrote Brahms. One of the most popular symphonies by Bruckner (if not the most popular), the Symphony No. 4 was written in 1874 and then radically revised in 1879–1880. It is in this latest version that we usually hear it these days. Its nickname of “Romantic” derives from the composer, who sketched the following programme to the opening movement: “Mediaeval city – dawn – the awakening trombones resound on the tower – the gates open – the horses ridden by knights trot out proudly – the magic of the forest surrounds them – the rustle of the forest, bird song – this is how the romantic image is formed”.
