Boris Berezovsky was born in Moscow in 1969. Following a London concert at the age of nineteen, the Times described him as a uniquely promising artist and two years later, he proved this by winning perhaps the world’s premiere prize, the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition. Since then his career has soared ever upwards. He has made numerous solo CDs for Teldec, and enjoyed tremendous acclaim with his accounts of piano concertos by Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Liszt. Dmitri Kitajenko studied in Lenin...grad and Moscow before further studies in Vienna with Hans Swarowski. His international career began when he won the Karajan Conductors’ Competition in 1969. He has filled the posts of chief conductor of the Moscow Opera House and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, and between 1990 and 1996, was music director of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. He is a regular guest with the leading European, Japanese and North American symphonic ensembles. He is currently recording all the symphonies of Shostakovich for the Capriccio label. The primary characteristic of the music of Khatchaturian is its evident inspiration by Armenian folk melodies and rhythms. He also succeeds in bringing the Eastern colourings of his small nation’s musical heritage into his work, as well as its dramatic atmosphere. His three-movement Piano Concerto was written in 1936. The composer himself premièred the concerto in Moscow in 1937. “Most of my symphonies are grave stones ... I’m glad to write a work to the memory of every victim but this is impossible. So instead I dedicate my music to them all”, wrote Shostakovich in his memoirs. His Symphony No. 11 (“The Year 1905” was premièred in Moscow in 1957. He had already experimented with programme music in his previous works and in this symphony the themes quote the melodies of the 1905 uprising.
