Giovanni Sollima was born into a musical family in 1962 and studied cello in Salzburg, before continuing compositional studies in Stuttgart with Milko Kelemen. Since then, he has pursued twin careers as performer and composer; as a cellist he has performed with the likes of Martha Argerich, Claudio Abbado and Giuseppe Sinopoli. His compositional language is a bold mix of classical music, jazz, ethno and rock. Major soloists are pleased to schedule his works on their programmes (Yo-Yo Ma, Mischa ...Maisky, Viktoria Mullova) as are leading conductors and orchestras (Ricardo Muti and La Scala Milan Orchestra; Iván Fischer and Accademia di Santa Cecilia; Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica). “My Symphony No. 6 offers a riddle that only a generation can undertake to decipher that has inhaled and digested the previous five”, wrote Mahler in 1904. And the symphony is indeed mysterious, written 1903–1904 during perhaps the happiest period in the composer’s life. Yet it is not only monumental but one of the most moving and pessimistic of his works – the subsequent nickname of Tragic is entirely apt. “In the final movement, he depicts himself and his annihilation, or as he said later: the fall of the Hero: his hero, on whom Fate strikes three times, and the third of the blows fells him like a tree”, wrote the composer’s wife Alma Mahler. “No other of his works flew so directly from his heart. The Sixth is his most personal work, and it was also prophetic. In the Kindertotenlieder and in this symphony, he anticipated his life in his work. Because fate struck him three times, and he had to fall from the third blow.”
