“On the day of the première of The Thieving Magpie I was writing the overture in the attic at La Scala where the manager had imprisoned me. Four theatre workers were commanded to guard me and had to throw each completed page through the window for the copyists. They were instructed that if a page was missing, I should be thrown through the window”, recalled Rossini about the birth of his overture in Milan in 1817. He was not thrown through the window and although the opera is rarely performed th...ese days, the delightful overture remains firmly part of the concert repertoire. Between April and December 1775, Mozart composed five violin concertos. The most popular from these is perhaps the Violin Concerto in A major. Because of her remarkable talent, the Grammy Award winning American soloist Hilary Hahn graduated from the Curtis Institute at the age of just sixteen and in 2001, was chosen by Time Magazine as America’s best young classical musician. Now one of the most in-demand international artists, besides her solo concerts, she regularly works with orchestras in Europe, Asia and North America. She first visited Hungary in 1994 when she was fourteen, when Iván Fischer invited her to play with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Antonín Dvořák composed his Symphony No. 7 on the occasion of his induction into the London Royal Philharmonic Society. It is one of his most mature, profound and perfect creations and later was dedicated to Hans von Bülow, one of its finest interpreters. On the front page of the manuscript, the conductor’s photo was attached, under which Dvořák wrote: “Praise be to you! You breathed life into the work!”
