Pianist and conductor: András Schiff Schubert: Symphony No. 2 in B flat major, D. 125 Haydn: Symphony in D major (“The Miracle”), Hob. I:96 Mozart: The Magic Flute, K. 620 – overture Mozart: Piano Concerto in B flat major, K. 595 András Schiff is one of the leading members of a legendary generation of pianists taught by Pál Kadosa. His concerts are highlights wherever in the world he happens to be. Winner of the Bartók-Pásztory Prize, the International Classical Music Award for Best Instrum...ental Soloist and the Kossuth Prize, Schiff still regularly performs in his native country, and likes working as both soloist and conductor with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. According to the autograph of the Symphony No. 2 by Schubert, the composer wrote it between December 10th 1814 and March 24th 1815. We don’t know when it was premièred but we do know when it was revived: October 20th 1877 in London. After the death of Prince Nicholas Esterházy, Joseph Haydn moved to Vienna having worked for the prince for over three decades. There, he was visited by the London impresario Peter Salomon who offered him a handsome contract. The Symphony in D major written in 1791 was premièred that same year in London. It is called “The Miracle” because in the concert hall, a chandelier came crashing down but no one was injured because the audience had flooded to the front of the hall to applaud both composer and performers. The Piano Concerto in B flat major K. 595 is Mozart’s last. It has a valedictory tone, but is a masterpiece of formal design, with the musical elements linked together by a polished and refined mastery. But it is also awash with characteristically Mozartean themes and character.
