Conductor: Iván Fischer Born in 1931, Alfred Brendel has enjoyed a unique career. For decades, there was little indication he would come to be regarded as one of the greatest artists of the second half of the 20th century. In childhood, he received only a haphazard musical education and at the age of fourteen, he was forced to dig sniper trenches in the war and suffered from bad frostbite. After the war, he did not purchase “official” piano lessons. He was though allowed to participate in maste...r classes by Edwin Fischer and Eduard Steuermann, but for the most part he was self taught. In 1949 he won the Busoni Competition and made recordings for the Vox label but he rarely performed outside his native Austria. His breakthrough came in the seventies with a concert in London: the next day three record companies offered him a contract and the impresarios flocked to engage him. He moved to London where he lives to this day and began his stunning solo career. Brendel is widely regarded as one of the most authentic interpreters of Beethoven, Mozart and Schumann and his style of playing is most usually described as analytical. He is convinced that the performer’s most important duty is to pay respect completely to the composer’s intentions without the performer’s personality showing. “I am responsible to the composer, and particularly to the piece.” Now seventy seven, he recently announced he would give his last concert in Vienna in December 2008. He bids farewell to Hungarian audiences with Mozart’s marvellous Piano Concerto in C minor. As customary, the Festival Orchestra’s highly popular “Secret Concerts” is keeping us in the dark as to the remainder of the programme.
