Conductor: Iván Fischer Featuring: András Schiff – piano Stravinsky: Concerto in E flat major for Chamber Orchestra (“Dumbarton Oaks”) Dvořák: Piano Concerto in G minor, op. 33 Dvořák: Notturno in B major, op. 40 Dvořák: Slavonic Dance in A major, op. 46, No. 5 Stravinsky: The Firebird – suite (1919) One of the legendary generations of Hungarian pianists, who studied under Pál Kadosa, András Schiff was born in 1953 and his performances are now celebrated throughout the world. Winner of ...the Bartók–Pásztory Prize, the Kossuth Prize and the Award for Best Classical Instrumental Soloist is a regular guest of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Stravinsky wrote his concerto for chamber orchestra “Dumbarton Oaks” in 1937–38 on commission of the Bliss couple, patrons of music, in Washington, after whose estate the work was named. It is cast in three movements which follow without a break and its contrapuntal style suggests Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. Although Dvořák is one of the most popular of all composers, there are many in the classical music world not even aware he wrote a Piano Concerto. The performance of the rarely heard composition of great dimensions will be a rare delight. The Firebird was one of the ballets Stravinsky wrote for Diaghilev’s company and its première in Paris in 1910 made the composer well known immediately. Later he recycled the material into an orchestral suite which he twice revised, the last time in 1919. The work demonstrates all the stylistic hallmarks of Stravinsky’s early style. He partly follows the orchestrational bravura of his teacher, Rimsky-Korsakov, partly dipping into the pictorial and daring sonorities of French impressionism. Additionally, The Firebird is cast in a very individual musical language shaped by Russian folk music.
