Conductor: Gerd Albrecht Featuring: Jonathan Biss – piano Dvořák: Othello – concert overture, op. 93 Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, op. 37 Janáček: Sinfonietta At the age of twenty seven, Gerd Albrecht became the youngest music director in Lübeck, Germany. He later served as principal conductor at the Berlin Deutsche Oper and then music director of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. Between 1988 and 1997, he enjoyed tenure as music director of the Hamburg Opera and in the ninetie...s, also filled the post of music director with the Czech Philharmonic. Born in 1980, American pianist Jonathan Bliss is a rising talent among the younger generation. He has worked with such leading conductors as Barenboim, Dutoit, Levine, Marriner, Maazel, Slatkin and Zinman and works regularly with the top American orchestras, among them the Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh and San Fransisco Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles and the New Philharmonic as well as the Philadelphia Orchestra. Antonín Dvořák composed three concert overtures in 1891–1892: In Nature’s Realm, Carnival and Othello. He planned them to be performed as a cycle and this is how they were heard at the Prague world première. Since then, the overtures have assumed independent lives in the concert repertoire. Beethoven composed his Piano Concerto No. 3 in 1800 but was not fully satisfied with it until 1802. Cast in three movements, it is in the composer’s favourite key of C minor and a beautifully constructed dialogue between solo instrument and orchestra in an equal and balanced relationship. The Sinfonietta written in 1926 is deservedly Janáček’s most popular work. Full of fresh ideas, variety and superb orchestration, it comes as a shock to learn he wrote it at the age of seventy two, just two years before his death.
