Conductor: Iván Fischer Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, op. 83 Rachmaninov: Symphony No. 2 in E minor, op. 27 Johannes Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is a favourite work in Hungary because it received its world premiere in Budapest on November 9th 1881, with the composer at the piano. The tremendous musical richness of this masterpiece and its dimensions give it a special place in Brahms’s oeuvre and within the concerto literature for piano. Knowing the importance of the four...-movement, fifty-minute piece we can only attribute it to the composer’s playful humour that in a letter to a friend he wrote about it saying: “I have written a tiny concerto for piano, with a nice little scherzo”. With his amazing technique and towering musicality, Yefim Bronfman is one of the most important pianists of our time. He was born in Tashkent in 1958 and in 1973 emigrated to Israel. In 1989 he became an American citizen where he now lives and is a regular visitor to all the world’s leading symphony orchestras. He has worked with such distinguished conductors as Barenboim, Dohnányi, Dutoit, Gergiev, Jansons, Maazel, Masur, Rattle, Temirkanov and Iván Fischer. In 1991 he won the Avery Fisher Prize. He has made numerous records, including a much praised series of violin-piano sonatas by Brahms, Mozart and Bartók, partnered by Isaac Stern, who said he especially enjoyed partnering Bronfman. He is now playing with the Festival Orchestra for the first time. Sergei Rachmaninov entered the St Petersburg Conservatoire at the age of ten to study piano, but Tchaikovsky advised him to try composing. His diploma piece, the opera Aleko was a great success, but after the disastrous premiere of his Symphony No. 1, written in 1895, he fell into depression. He needed ten years to recover from this trauma. In 1907, he finally dispelled the demons with his Symphony No. 2 and this became his most successful creation, and is now one of the most popular and frequently played compositions in the symphonic concert repertoire.
