Anton Bruckner was one of the most important figures of late Romanticism. He was an enthusiastic admirer of Wagner but in his own music, it was principally Wagner’s orchestration that he emulated; his compositions are far more influenced by Austrian folk music. His majestic eighth symphony, the last he completed, is 80 minutes long and dedicated to Emperor Franz Joseph. It was premiered in Vienna and its massive scoring and profundity makes it perhaps his greatest composition. “The Finale crowns... not only his symphony but Bruckner’s entire oeuvre with its brilliant and festive sonority”, wrote music historian Marianne Pándi. János Fürst studied violin at the Budapest Academy of Music before working abroad as a concertmaster with several orchestras, while he studied conducting. He is at home in all musical genres and for nine years was music director of the Marseille Opera. He is a regular guest with the world’s leading orchestras and also teaches at the conducting faculty of the Paris Conservatoire. Since 2002, he has been a regular participant in Hungarian musical life as both the artistic director of the Szeged Symphony Orchestra and guest conductor of Budapest orchestras.
