The overture to L'italiana in Algeri is among Rossini's most famous and frequently performed overtures. The intricacy and humour of the music make this joyful piece of music irresistible and it features the familiar “Rossini crescendo”: a subdued beginning followed by the same phrase repeated with increasing force. The overture's instrumentation also grows in complexity throughout, with individual instruments performing brief solos before the piece is completed in the triumphant key of C major. ... In the early 1780s, Mozart dedicated much of his time to studying the oeuvres of the Baroque masters. His learnings of counterpoint are evidenced by the military and portentous first movement of his Piano Concerto in C major. An unusual feature of the movement is the composer's passing of the entire central phrase to the orchestra – choosing not to feature it at all in the piano part. It is also the orchestra that is responsible for introducing the central theme of the Romantic-inspired slow movement. The siciliana rhythm of the finale's rondo theme is interrupted by several unexpected slower passages. After the interval, the audience will hear a creation from another of Zoltán Kocsis's favourite composers in the form of Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2, premièred in 1908 in Saint Petersburg. Stung by the criticism of his first symphony, Rachmaninov slumped into a deep depression, emerging to write his second work more methodically and with greater fervour than ever. He spent three years at the turn of the century with his family in Dresden, devoting much of this time his music. Although a section of critics marked the symphony down for its perceived sentimentality, it has been hailed as an enormous success from its première to this day.
