Philippe Herreweghe studied piano at the Conservatoire in his native Gent before undertaking medical and psychiatric studies during which he formed his ensemble Collegium Vocale Gent. Over the past twenty years, he has created a variable sized company that is capable of interpreting the music of any era, from Renaissance to contemporary. For these formations, the Collegium Vocale performs the music of Bach and his predecessors. Herreweghe regularly works with numerous other symphonic and cham...ber groups and his discography, which contains works by Lassus, Bach, Mozart, Fauré, Bruckner, Schoenberg and others, is proof of his versatility. Since 1982 he has been artistic director of the Saintes Ancient Music Festival, while in 1993 he and his ensemble were awarded the title “Cultural Ambassadors of Flanders”.
