Bartók Spring Online
Produced by Müpa Budapest
Bartók Spring
The program was cancelled

We regret to inform our audience that the premiere of Bach: Christian Cantatas has been cancelled due to the current state of the pandemic.

Thank you for your understanding!

The Christian Cantatas is a production that brings together three cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 4, 82 and 56). Originally, they were not written for the same period of the liturgical year, and their particular theological content is different. On this occasion, however, their shared aspects will be highlighted, thanks to a dramatic and staging concept. The works will be performed with a new Hungarian libretto by János Lackfi, and the bass voice of the protagonist will be sung by István Kovács.
The scenes of the Christian Cantatas are connected by associations to biblical stories and motifs. The story is about a prophet-like man, his being chosen and the stages of his journey. He wanders in a modern world, a megapolis, encountering and being repelled by its phenomena, troubles and influences. From the throng of people (the performers of the Forte Company), our hero finds his way into a universe ruled by nature, where death itself is a "natural,” accepted state, which brings rest.

In Hungarian, with Hungarian and English surtitles.

This performance of the Bartók Spring is presented by Müpa Budapest as a joint event with Hungarian State Opera.

We would like to draw the attention of our audience to that the current pandemic regulations may also affect the online program of the Bartók Spring International Arts Weeks, the program and the dates of the events may change.
