István Várdai has returned from Munich with an amazing competition victory. The 29-year-old cellist came away with the first prize in the cello category from one of Europe's most prestigious events of its kind, the ARD International Music Competition, held by the joint organization of German public radios. Success at this competition has propelled the career of such artists as Maurice André, Heinz Holliger, Mitsuko Uchida, Thomas Quasthoff and Christian Tetzlaff. It adds to the value of Is...tván Várdai's achievement that he formerly won at the Geneva International Music Competition, and is now the only cellist to hold both honours. In true style, he will appear at CAFe Budapest as the soloist of a relatively seldom heard 20th-century masterpiece that was once brought to success by Gregor Piatigorsky. Paul Hindemith's Cello Concerto No. 3 was commissioned - as was Béla Bartók's Concerto - by Serge Koussevitzky, legendary leader of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This evening Várdai partners with Varga Gilbert, who conducts the Hungarian National Philharmonic. The programme also includes a particularly brazen and grotesque scene from John Adam's political satire, Nixon in China, and Dvořák's popular Slavonic Dances.
