Berlioz composed his dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet to a libretto by Emile Deschamps based on Shakespeare’s tragedy. The composer conducted its premiere in the year he wrote it, 1839. The work calls for large orchestra, choir and vocal soloists. The music of Romeo and Juliet makes use of opera, oratorio and symphonic expressive devices. The most important moments are entrusted to the orchestra – the depiction of drama and interpretation of feelings. The vocal soloists are more designed to gr...ab the audience’s attention. The work is cast in four movements, with an orchestral introduction and a spoken prologue.
