Composed in 1830, Chopin’s Piano Concerto in E minor was introduced to Hungarian audiences five years after its world première in a performance by the young Ferenc Erkel. “This work, not yet heard here and written in a new style, won general approval for both its pleasant inner qualities and its highly competent performance,” wrote Gábor Mátray, a noted music critic of the time. Scholars have seen the work as both a farewell to Poland and to the piano concerto genre. Despite this, rather than be...ing characterised by a painfully nostalgic tone, it requires in its heroic slow movement the soothing touch of a lullaby, and above all a virtuoso performance technique. Taking on this multi-layered task is the talented young pianist Ivett Gyöngyösi, born in the small town of Vásárosnamény but currently residing in the Zugló district of Budapest. Beginning the piano at the age of seven, Gyöngyösi won her first competition just two years later. At the age of 11, she was accepted onto the Liszt Academy's programme for children of exceptional talent, and in 2011 entered the piano faculty in the class of Attila Némethy. Since autumn 2009, she has been a pupil of Tamás Vásáry, and has so far attained outstanding results in seven international piano competitions. A special feature of this concert is the first performance in Budapest of a work by the late Ahn Eak-tai. Born in 1906, the Korean composer studied in Tokyo and the United States before embarking on a European tour, during which time he spent a year with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Felix Weingartner. Between 1938 and 1940, he studied under Zoltán Kodály at the Academy of Music in Budapest. From 1955 until his death in 1965, he lived in Korea, where he organised the first music festival in Seoul. His Symphonic Fantasy Korea premièred in Dublin in 1938.
