This last concert of the season ticket series is aimed at the young and young at heart among the audience, presenting a selection of evergreen classical favourites from the great masters of American music. The emphasis of the programme is on light, ambitious and multi-layered tones. Gershwin’s pieces betray both the influence of Debussy and of street music. According to Előd Juhász, “his bright and simple, but exquisite, somewhat exotic individual sense of melody can be traced to a trio of sourc...es (American Indian, negro and Afro-American). Gershwin melded the spirit of negro songs and spirituals, the tone of jazz and lighter musical genres into an undeniably idiosyncratic form of music with a Romantic stamp and symphonic character.” Of the three composers to be heard here, Leroy Anderson is least known in Hungary. Born in America to Swedish immigrants, his background meant that he spoke not only Swedish and English fluently but another half-dozen European languages to boot, and consequently found his services required by the US Army. After the Second World War, he was assigned to work for military intelligence at the Pentagon for many years, during which time (1946-47) he wrote his two best-known works, the two light orchestral pieces Sleigh Ride and Fiddle Faddle, both of which will be heard here in concert. West Side Story is Leonard Bernstein’s most frequently performed work and one of the definitive compositions in the history of the musical. Notwithstanding the hit songs it contains, this modern tale of Romeo and Juliet is no mere adaptation but a sensitive period evocation of the 1950s. Presented by: Zugló Philharmonia
