Paul Dukas wrote his superb scherzo for large orchestra based on Goethe’s ballad of the same name. The composer conducted its première in 1897. The hero of the poem is the self-confident sorcerer’s apprentice who has learned some (but only some) of the rudiments of magic. When his master is away, the apprentice enchants the broom and commands it fill the bath with water. Unfortunately, he does not know the magic word to make the broom stop, which continues bringing water, and the chaos is only b...rought to an end when the sorcerer himself returns home. Dukas’s musical composition cleverly follows the original poem, the allusions are clear and for this reason the work has become widely popular, wrote Marianne Pándi in her Concert Guide. The Dukas piece will be followed by the Oboe Concerto of 1951 by Frigyes Hidas, which will be played by the solo oboist of the MR Symphonics. Puccini was still studying in his hometown of Lucca when he wrote his Messa di Gloria. He intended it as his conservatoire graduation piece and it was premièred on July 12th 1880 on the festival of St Paul to great acclaim. Puccini was later to use certain motifs in his subsequent operas. Do not be surprised if you hear the familiar bars from the finale of the first act of Tosca in the Gloria, or the second act of Manon Lescaut in the Agnus Dei.
