Miklós Rózsa (1907–1995) was born in Budapest and is famous these days for his film scores. In Paris, he made the acquaintance of Arthur Honegger who introduced him to the world of cinema. He received his first commission from Alexander Korda and this film The Thief of Baghdad brought him world fame. From 1940 he lived in Hollywood and composed incidental music to over one hundred films, earning him some Oscars in the process. But he remained faithful to his original vocation and in 1953, wrote his Violin Concerto to a commission from Jascha Heifetz, who according to contemporary reports, performed the solo part at its world première with the passion and bravura of a gypsy bandleader, and truly located the work’s Hungarian soul as a result. The concerto received its Hungarian première in 2008. Serge Rachmaninov said on several occasions that even as a child, he was fascinated by church bells.
