Kálmán Záborszky, artistic director of the Zugló Philharmonia and its chief conductor ushers in the new subscription series with an evening of Mozart. His Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major was composed in 1779, probably with himself in mind as the viola soloist. In the concerto, the violin and viola received perfectly equal and balanced roles. The two instruments freely exchange the musical material, generally playing separately and continue a dialogue with each other. The viola often takes o...ver the phrases heard on violin but places them in a new illumination or takes them into a new direction and the two instruments are only harmoniously reunited into a “single instrument” at the end of these passages. The concerto follows the classical concerto order of movements, with a weighty opening movement followed by a very personal Andante, and the finale is a virtuosic and witty rondo à la Mozart. “As an engaged couple, we had long gone to Holy Mass together, to confession and communion and I realise that I have never prayed so intimately or confessed and partook in communion with such devotion as when I am by her side. She feels exactly the same. So we are made for each other and God, who arranged everything, and so saw to this, will not abandon us”, wrote Mozart to his father on August 17th 1782, two weeks after marrying his beloved Constanze. To give thanks to his marriage, he decided to compose a mass. In the end, the Mass in C minor remained incomplete: besides the Kyrie and Gloria, he only composed the Sanctus and Benedictus and only two movements from the Credo. The Agnus Dei is entirely missing, but despite this, the fragmentary composition is a truly moving work.
