Pianist and conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Ravel: Pavane pour une infante défunte Mozart: Piano Concerto in G major, K. 453 Debussy: Three Nocturnes (1. Clouds, 2. Festivals, 3. Sirens) Debussy: La Mer – three symphonic sketches Maurice Ravel’s early work Pavane pour une infante défunte was originally written for piano and only orchestrated later. “Its solemnity and moving sadness gives this subtle work its unique poetry”, writes Marianne Pándi in her Concert Guide. Claude Debussy gave a concret...e programme for his cycle influenced by the impressionistic paintings of James Whistler. “The term nocturnes is this time more general and should be understood in the more decorative sense […] Clouds: The unchanging aspect of the sky, and the slow, solemn movement of the clouds dissolving in grey tints lightly touched with white. Festivals: The restless dancing rhythm of the atmosphere interspersed with sudden flashes of light. There is also an incidental procession (a dazzling imaginary vision) passing through and through and mingling with the aerial revery; but the background of uninterrupted festival is persistent with its blending of music, and luminous dust participating in the universal rhythm of all things. Sirens: the sea with its infinite rhythm; the secretive song of the sirens is heard from the waves glistening like silver in the moonlight, they laugh then die away.” The “three symphonic sketches” description of La Mer conceals a three-movement symphony. The introduction of the opening movement, the scherzo-like second movement and the concluding rondo finale are reminiscent of classical Viennese tradition. So the work is a series of impressionistic impulses but also a unified work building on established traditions, which is subordinated to the logic of musical construction.
