Cantata aquilarum (“Song of Eagles”) was written by László Dubrovay for a verse cycle by Tibor Gyurkovics. The verse reinforces the sense of solidarity among the Hungarian people, evokes tragic moments from our past, and touches upon vital questions of our present. It gives us faith in a better, more humane future. The foundation and source of this conviction is the Hungarian landscape, its people and culture, and the love of the Hungarian homeland. The cantata based on Gyurkovics’s verse is in ...one movement, but is divided into five parts in accordance with the five poems concerned, connected by the dramatic theme that opens the work. Its musical language blends the melodies derived from Hungarian folk music of the East with the Western harmonic system typical of Dubrovay and sound effects made possible through the latest instrumental playing techniques. On hearing the name Nino Rota, most of us think of his famous film music. Yet his Divertimento – in effect a concerto – is one of the finest pieces in the repertoire for double bass, and will be performed here by Ödön Rácz, principal bassist for the Vienna Philharmonic. The orchestral introduction to the first movement resembles the motifs of the characters in Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, primarily due to the instrumentation, melodic line and rhythmic peculiarities. The second movement is a short march, its light-hearted mood deriving from the constant musical cross-talk between soloist and orchestra. The mood of the third movement – the aria – contrasts with the rest of the work, and it is perhaps here that the instrument displays its most favourable attributes. The final movement provides a fitting close to the work with its even more rapid virtuosic runs and humorous interplay between soloist and orchestra. Presented by: Zugló Philharmonia
