The Szent István Király Symphony Orchestra was formed from students at the Budapest István Secondary School in 1954 by composer, conductor and school vocal teacher József Záborszky. It started with 16 members and rapidly developed into a 90 strong symphony orchestra, and was later joined by the Oratorio Choir. In 1988, Kálmán Záborszky took over the ensembles which since their inception have invited some of the great names of Hungarian and international music to be their guests. Their resident g...uest conductors are now Yuri Simonov, Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi and Mátyás Antal. The orchestra, in 2000 awarded the Hungarian Heritage Prize, has given world premières of many Hungarian composers’ works as well as Hungarian premières of numerous 19th and 20th century pieces. Since January 2006, the semi-professional ensemble has been run by the Zuglói Filharmónia Kht. The first part of the concert is homage to József Záborszky, who celebrated his ninetieth birthday in November 2008 and who wrote several oratorios for the ensembles he founded. His Palm Sunday Passion is based on the St Luke Gospel and was written in 1988. It follows the passion story beginning with Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem. The Szent István Király Symphony Orchestra keeps an accurate record of its performances. So we can know that during their more than 1200 Hungarian and international concerts, they have performed Antonín Dvořák’s perhaps most popular work, The New World Symphony thirteen times, among others with conductors Ervin Lukács and Tamás Vásáry.
