Conductor: Kálmán Záborszky Handel: The Messiah – Part 1 and 2 of the oratorio Georg Friedrich Handel was born in Saxony but spent much of his working life in England where he developed the genre of the English language oratorio. In his works he gives pride of place to the chorus which represents the Jewish people – and sometimes their enemies –, and in the action and moral lesson, is frequently allotted the main role. Handel wrote what has remained to this day his most popular oratorio, The ...Messiah in 1741, taking less than a month to do so! The libretto was assembled from the Bible and the Common Prayer Book by Charles Jennens; it was premièred in Dublin in 1742 at a benefit concert and the audience received this epic setting of Biblical stories with great enthusiasm. The work uniquely fuses Italian opera, English anthem and German passion traditions.
