Conductor: János Kovács Soloists: Ádám Hegyes, István Lajkó – piano Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 2 in B flat major (“Lobgesang”), op. 52 Saint-Saëns: Carnival of the Animals – zoological fantasy R. Strauss: Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks – symphonic poem, op. 28 Felix Mendelssohn, who resolved in his creations to unite the religious and musical aspirations of his time in the highest harmony, composed his Symphony No. 2 in 1840 and it was premièred on the 400th anniversary of the invention of... book printing. The principal guiding theme of this symphonic cantata is gratitude and at the start of the work, we hear a Gregorian psalm melody which progresses throughout the three movements and finally culminates in the choral finale with the words of the 150th psalm, which itself are eloquent words of gratitude and praise. After the break, the mood lightens to one of humour and good spirits. Camille Saint-Saëns’s series of musical parodies, Carnival of the Animals at first sight appears to be depictions of animals but the composer in reality was also spearing various well known Parisian personalities! The famous Swan melody is one of the most loved pieces in the cello repertoire. “Old-fashioned roguish manner, in rondo form”, was the subtitle Richard Strauss gave to his symphonic poem Till Eulenspiegel. Although in the piece, Till, the young scallywag, characterised by the horn theme, does end up being executed at the end following his many adventures, the cheerful conclusion evokes the eternal mischief maker who time and again, pokes fun at pompous citizenry.
