Conductor: Yuri Simonov Featuring: Zita Zárbok – viola, King Saint Stephen Music College Male and Female Choir (choirmasters: Katalin Rónaszéki Őrfalvy, Tünde Tőkés), Saint Stephen Secondary School Mixed Choir (choirmaster: Elvira Szilágyi Mátyus) Bartók: Two Pictures, op. 10 Bartók: Viola Concerto Borodin: Symphony No. 2 in B minor Borodin: Prince Igor – Polovtsian Dances The work of Béla Bartók and Alexander Borodin are entirely different and yet both are profoundly rooted in their cou...ntry’s folk music. The two Bartók works represent important points in his oeuvre: Two Pictures has a first movement clearly influenced by Debussy with its transparent subtlety and pastel colours; the Viola Concerto – orchestrated by Tibor Serly – was Bartók’s final message, with its uniquely characteristic closing movement which presents his familiar barbaric/motoric/dance/folk music voice. The soloist this evening will be Zita Zárbok who is currently a student of Géza Németh at the Academy of Music. Last year, she spent a year in New Jersey thanks to a scholarship, where her teacher was Honggang Li. According to Borodin, in the first movement of his Second Symphony he wanted to depict a gathering of Russian soldiers. In the third, slow movement he depicted the ancient Russian “troubadurs”, while the closing movement is a vast tableau about the feast and entertainment for the warriors. This framework offered him a superb possibility for an influential interpretation of Russian folk music. The Polovtsian Dances close the third act of Borodin’s posthumous opera Prince Igor when Khan Konchak stages a dance by his slaves to entertain the captured Prince. The entertainment is made all the more enjoyable by a choir of three hundred people.
