This story is set in a Székely village and it ultimately has a happy ending: the accused suitor is forgiven and the rich lad is taken away by the gendarmes. At the end of the opera, faithfulness reaps its just reward with everyone finding their partner. The ensembles of the Zugló Philharmonia hope that their concerts in this jubilee year will contribute to the educational ideals finding understanding ears via Kodály’s works: “Good music undoubtedly has an improving effect on people because a sense of responsibility and moral seriousness shines from it. Everything is missing from bad music, its destructive effect goes so far as to shake our belief in moral laws.”
