Conductor: István Záborszky Featuring: István Kovácsházi – tenor, Katariina Záborszky – violin, Ferenc Liszt Secondary School Grand Choir (choirmaster: Katalin Kovács), Joensuu Orthodox Male Choir (choirmaster: István Záborszky) Kodály: Psalmus Hungaricus Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D major, op. 35 Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture, op. 49 How else could the subscription series of the King Saint Stephen Symphony Orchestra and Oratorio Choir start in the jubilee Kodály year than with a piece ...by the great man? The paraphrase of a psalm by Mihály Kecskeméti Vég, the Psalmus Hungaricus proclaims the power of the Hungarian people, consoling and giving them power through the storms of history. A different example of patriotism is Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. It celebrates in music the defeat of Napoleon’s troops. The performance features the Joensuu Orthodox Male Choir, who arrive from Finland, as do the soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, the young and exceptionally talented Katariina Záborszky, and the evening’s conductor István Záborszky.
