The story of Zubin Mehta and the Israeli Philharmonic is a real-life tale suitable for a novel. Before long, will be looking back at five decades of history. Born in India but starting his career in Vienna, the conductor was first taken on as a musical consultant by the orchestra , which then named him musical director in 1977, later bestowing the title Musical Director for Life on him in 1981. The 78-year-old Mehta, who has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is one of the best kn...own and sought-after conductors, belonging as he does to the world's first rank for a good half century. Music, spirit and humanity all combine together in his person and in his work. In the spirit of brotherhood of Beethoven and Mozart, numerous major humanitarian and charitable endeavours have been attached to his name. With an enormous orchestra composed of the Israel Philharmonic and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, he played Mahler's 2nd (Resurrection) Symphony next to the Buchenwald death camp in 1999. Ten years later, he launched a large-scale educational program in three cities for young Israeli-Arab musicians.
A mere six months after his spring concert in the Bartók Béla National Concert Hall, he is returning again, with the style that perhaps suits him best, and in which he is without peer. He will be conducting two classic works of elemental power from the high romantic period. One of Tchaikovsky's final works, his Symphony No. 6, written in 1893, conceals within itself passion and suffering, life and death. The work slated for the second part of the concert, Ein Heldenleben - as its genre indicates - openly reveals itself and its aim: Richard Strauss's likewise autobiographically referential symphonic poem was in its time considered the very grandest of single-movement compositions.
