Bartók, Kodály and Weiner formed the New Hungarian Music Society (UMZE) in 1911 to present contemporary works in Hungary. A new UMZE was formed some 85 years later under the leadership of Zoltán Rácz with a similar goal of maintaining the latest works of contemporary Hungarian and foreign composers on the repertoire, as well as significant compositions from the 20th century. The same endeavour is reflected in the programme for this evening’s concert. Zsolt Durkó, who died in 1997, was commission...ed to create Turner Illustrations by the BBC. “It stands out not only from Durkó’s life’s work but also from the latest crop of new Hungarian music, principally due to its free-flowing, natural, fresh and melodic style,” wrote György Kroó of the 1976 première. András Szőllősy’s work mourning Igor Stravinsky, composed two years later, has – to again quote Kroó – “the scale of a pocket requiem and a volume of sound which is strange at first, but which covers the range in mood of funeral music (…) leaving an impression on us through one or two moments of its final tableau of judgement and the spirited Lacrimosa movement.” Zsolt Serei borrowed the title for his chamber concerto composition from Goethe, and his inspiration from a photograph of a solar eclipse. In 1999, László Tihanyi adapted certain themes from his trio Schattenspiel (Shadow Play) for chamber ensemble. The tonal quality of Atte is determined by instruments arranged in a special spacial configuration, while the work takes as its conceptual core a sentence heard in the film Don Juan in Hell: “He who is left alone with his shadow must either change or die.” Presented by: UMZE, Palace of Arts
