Zoltán Kodály’s former students always used to celebrate his birthday at the Budapest Academy of Music. This tradition has survived his death, because even though he passed away 42 years ago, he still radiates an almost living presence. We can see now from the perspective of history that he was the “great teacher” of 20th century Hungarian music, as Vörösmarty said about Liszt in the 19th century – and one of its most important prophets. Hungarian vocal and music teaching and folk music research... still lives from his work. Thanks to the Palace of Arts for giving a home to the celebration now that the Academy of Music is undergoing renovation. (András Batta)
