On 11 March 2011, a huge earthquake registering 9.0 on the Richter scale shook the eastern coast of Japan. The earthquake led to a tidal wave measuring ten metres in height. The catastrophe led to tens of thousands of dead, injured and missing, while the actual material damage is impossible to estimate, not to mention the longer-term impact of economic losses. Among the buildings that perished in the disaster was the Miyagi Kenmin Kaikan concert hall in Sendai. The Palace of Arts provides the Bé...la Bartók National Concert Hall free of charge while the involved artists will waive their fees. The concert will present excerpts from the Wagner opera Tannhäuser, as well as Götterdämmerung, the last opera in the composer’s Ring tetralogy. Both of these works will be presented at this year’s “Wagner in Budapest” festival. The concert will also feature soprano Tünde Szabóki, a recognised interpreter of the music of Wagner.
