For tonight’s concert, György Vashegyi and his two ensembles – the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra, which plays a selection of authentic period instruments – have combined works from a pair of outstanding composers known to concert audiences not for their ecclesiastical choral music, but for their instrumental works. Antonio Vivaldi was in his creative heyday in the first half of the 18th century, while Joseph Haydn was more active in its second half, carving his name into music history wi...th a rich oeuvre of symphonies, string quartets, keyboard sonatas and oratorios. Yet parts of the enormous bodies of work of both composers only entered the musical consciousness in the 20th century. The music of Vivaldi, dubbed the Red Priest because of his auburn hair, only began its renaissance in the mid-20th century. His most popular church works, the Magnificat and the Gloria, are frequently performed together and have been part of the concert repertoire ever since. Equally, many decades had to pass after Haydn's death before the Austrian composer's Mass in D minor came to prominence in the concert setting. This piece is one of six Latin grand masses written between 1798 and 1802 by the now world-famous Austrian master. It was composed for the name day of Princess Esterházy once the Josephinian reforms that restricted the use of church music had been repealed. The many tragic passages of music that comprise the work reflect the Napoleonic Wars that ravaged Europe and this context is also apparent in the piece's subtitle of Mass for Troubled Times. The work became known as the Nelson Mass only when it was performed in Kismarton (now Eisenstadt) shortly after Admiral Nelson's decisive victory over Napoleon in 1800. Presented by: Palace of Arts
