Mary Zimmerman, under whose direction Natalie Dessay played the lead role of Lucia Di Lammermoor in the phenomenal new performance of the last season, excellently emphasises the duality of sleep and being awake in the masterful staging of The Somnambulist in contemporary setting. The leading female role of the story set in a small Swiss village is played by Natalie Dessay who originally studied to become an actress. The French singer, appearing primarily in Richard Strauss pieces at the beginnin...g of her career, made her debut in the United States in 2003 and a year later she sang the role of Amina in The Somnambulist with great success. This real expert of bel canto frequently and gladly plays together with Peruvian Juan Diego Flórez whose lyrical tenor did not conquer the world with the power of its sound, but with its clarity and brilliant agility and who steps on stage once again as a partner to Dessay as Elvino. Dessay and Flórez were dazzlingly brilliant at leading opera houses of the world in their recently ended tour performing The Daughter of the Regiment.
