In 1900, Vienna's already lively music scene received a new splash of colour when Ferdinand Löwe introduced a new orchestra performing a variety of new works alongside the popular pieces of the day. Then still known as Wiener Concertverein, the ensemble was the forerunner of today's Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In its early days, it performed such works as Bruckner's Symphony No. 9, Schönberg's Songs of Gurre and Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand and was conducted by such illustrious names ...as Bruno Walter, Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler, György Széll and Hans Knappertsbusch. The years following World War II were characterised by two legendary conductors in Hans Swarowsky and Josef Krips. Famous guest conductors have also worked with the orchestra, including Leonard Bernstein, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Claudio Abbado and Sergiu Celibidache. The orchestra's guest soloist for this performance is 22-year-old Japanese-German piano sensation Alice Sara Ott, an artist who already has several hugely successful recordings to her name. A fantastic talent, she has already recorded Liszt's 12 etudes for Germany's largest record company, a work both technically and artistically among the most difficult pieces of piano literature. To celebrate Chopin year in 2010, she released a highly successful collection of all of the composers waltzes. Presented by the Budapest Spring Festival
