The distinguished 17th century organist and composer who was deeply admired by Johann Sebastian Bach, Girolamo Frescobaldi published a number of organ works in 1635 with the title Fiori musicali. The first volume contains Messa della Madonna, and we shall hear this mass according to the traditions of its time, with organ and Gregorian chant alternating. Light effects and a stage projection will create the mood of a 16th century Italian cathedral in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall. The orga...nist plays in the organ loft while the choir will be placed in several groups on the third floor gallery and in the reverberant chambers. The leitmotif for the meditative and quiet Via Crucis is the Gregorian melody from the hymn O Crux, ave (“Hail, O cross”). Franz Liszt began writing this work during his 1876–1877 sojourn at the Villa d’Este in Tivoli near Rome and finished it 1878 in Budapest. The Biblical quotation, hymn and chorale text were chosen by his lover and patron Princess Carolyne Wittgenstein, and this work for piano (or organ) depicts Christ’s tribulations from the judgement of Pontius Pilate to his death on the cross and his burial. The work reflects Liszt’s profound faith and its suggestive atmosphere offers a sublime experience in the concert hall or on disc, but can only be best appreciated when heard in a church. Projected images of the stations of the cross will help recreate this atmosphere.
