The title role of Verdi’s opera, premièred in 1871, will be sung by Violeta Urmana who with her interpretations of Italian dramatic soprano roles has piled success upon success. She also enjoys an international reputation in Wagner and also as a lieder singer and in recent years, has increasingly exploited the colours of her fulsome mezzo voice as well. A similarly subtle singer is Dolora Zajick who will be singing the role of Amneris. To be a true Verdi mezzo-soprano is a rare gift and this mak...es roles such as Azucena, Amneris and Eboli almost tailor-made for her. Radames will be played by the South African born dramatic tenor, Johan Botha who has impressed everyone with his performances in Italian and German opera. Roberto Scandiuzzi who plays Ramafis has been heard before at Palace of Arts: he was a guest along with Joseph Calleja in Erika Miklósa’s tremendously successful evening in 2007. Similarly, conductor Daniele Gatti is also familiar to us, having been celebrated with a standing ovation at his 2006 Budapest concert with the Filarmonica della Scala at the Palace of Arts. The Metropolitan Opera reserves the right to change the cast. Running times are approximate only.
