Martijn Padding: Three Summer Pieces - premier in Hungary Frederic Rzewski: Coming Together Louis Andriessen: Workers Union Louis Andriessen: Racconto dall'inferno (Story from Hell) - premier in Hungary Conductor: Zoltán Rácz Featuring: Cristina Zavalloni – jazz singer, Tibor Szemző - narration The UMZE Chamber Ensemble believe it’s important to devote an entire concert each season to the work of a living composer and tonight this honour falls to world famous Dutch composer Louis And...riessen. The event is part of the LOW Holland-Flemish Cultfest lasting one month and besides a more recent work by Andriessen, we’ll also hear a work from 1975, the politically motivated Workers’ Union, about which the composer writes: “This piece is a combination of individual freedom and severe discipline: its rhythm is exactly fixed; the pitch, on the other hand, is indicated only approximately, on a single-lined stave. It is difficult to play in an ensemble and to remain in step, sort of thing like organising and carrying on political action”. At Louis Andriessen’s recommendation, the concert will also present a work by a member of the younger generation of Dutch composers Martijn Padding which was premiered in summer 2007 at the Holland Festival.
