Ten years after winning first prize in the Budapest International Organ Competition in 1960, Zsigmond Szathmáry was already living in Germany and working as church organist and cantor in Hamburg-Wellingsbüttel. His path then led him through Bremen, Lübeck and Hamburg to Freiburg, where he has been a professor at the Hochschule für Musik since 1978. His qualities as a performer and teacher were meanwhile recognized in Japan and South Korea, and he has also held regular master classes at the Summe...r Academy for Organists in Haarlem in the Netherlands. In addition to performing the contemporary musical repertoire, he is a noted interpreter of the compositions of Bach and Liszt. He is also highly active as an arranger and composer, creating works characterised by a bold experimental spirit and the keen use of electro-acoustical tools.
