The most curious Hungarian, Alexander Csoma de Körös set off into Asia in the early 19th century to hunt for the origins of the Hungarians. But what exactly happened to him on this immense journey? Whatever it was, his thousands of adventures and experience have all been lost in time. A scholar-artist-minstrel group now discover this unique path and the stories of an adventurous soul using their own devices: Tibor Szemző went there, István “Taikyo” Szaladják photographed it, Gábor Roskó drew it..., while Mari Törőcsik tells the story – as in the Szekler legends and as the heroic deeds of Csoma were brought to life in the imagination of Tibet scholar László Sári. During the performance, the “action” of the opera is brought to life on a huge film screen while at the same time, the composer’s troop of singers, instrumentalists and the story teller, give voice to Csoma’s inner voice and the marvellous stories about him, in perfect harmony with the projection. The film version of the opera, A Guest of Life (www.csomafilm.hu) won many important awards both in Hungary and abroad; its director and composer, Tibor Szemző, was awarded the Hungarian Critics’ Prize in 2006. The film has been shown and premièred at various international festivals all over the world.
