In the 2016/17 season, the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra are continuing their exploration of those parts of the 18th and 19th century repertoire that are somehow connected to Hungary. As part of this work, we are placing special focus on what is today unfortunately the inadequately familiar work of Michael Haydn (1737-1806), the younger brother of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809). It's impossible to stress enough that in the realm of liturgical music, Michael Haydn's acclaim across Europe ...surpassed even that of his world-famous older brother. Of the two Haydns' final masses being played tonight, the one by Michael Haydn is being played, on period instruments, to the best of our knowledge for the first time in Hungary since the 19th century.
Unfortunately, the sacred musical works by the two Haydn brothers are only relatively seldom paired together, which is why following the better-known Harmoniemesse (1802), there will be a performance of Michael Haydn's marvellous and, sadly, rarely played work dating from 1803, a year after Joseph's work and the same year as Beethoven's "Eroica” Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major: the Saint Francis Mass.
