Elias Canetti has explained that the word Eraritjaritjaka in the language of the Australian aborigine people signifies the feeling when “desire fills us for something that is lost”. Based on Canetti’s diary entries, Heiner Goebb...els and Andre Wilms have assembled a lapidarium (“a museum of phrases”) which attempts by turning to the language of the stage to share with us the penetratingly intelligent vision of this writer, his thoughts about music, our habits and vanities, about cities, the media and even animals. The intellectual journey of the author helps uncover the troubles of our era. Wilms performs the text with merciless rigour. During the performance though, a sometimes serious, sometimes ironic relationship links the words of Canetti to musical works performed by The Mondriaan Quartet. It is homage to the perfect and emblematic form of European art music, the string quartet, in which we hear works by Bach and Ravel, as well as Gavin Bryars, George Crumb, Vasili Lobanov, Aleksei Mosolov and Heiner Goebbels.
